Ellis Faas is the beauty brand on all of our lips at Liberty at the moment (literally) Her milky eye shades and glossy lipsticks in her specially designed silver holder are just the ticket for the glamorous girl on the go. We caught up with the make-up artist herself who let us in on her beauty regime and the secrets behind her Human Colours collection… 

Q: Hi Ellis  can you tell us more about your Human Colours collection?

A: When we decided to go ahead with the plan to start an own brand, I started off  creating the colour ranges. I have always been mixing my own colours for the shows and photoshoots that I worked on, so that job was done rather quickly. When I had finished, I looked at it from a distance and started wondering why I loved these colours so much. They’re all broken colours, and I discovered that unconsciously I had been inspired by the colours that are already inside the human body.

Q: Who is the Ellis Faas girl?

A: The Ellis Faas girl is someone like me someone who is “on the go”, who likes to discover new things, who like things that are beautiful but easy to use…

Q: How would you define beauty?

A: I bet it sounds corny, but I truly believe that beauty comes from within, both physically and mentally. Makeup can of course really help in feeling good.People always think there is some mystery in being a make-up artist, but really its all about  technique and that’s why I created a brand that technically is fool-proof.

Q: Your grandfather was hair and beauty guru and your great Aunt a couturière- how did they influence you…?

A: My Grandfather owned the largest hair and beauty salon in Amsterdam. The stories about them infused us grandchildren with a feeling that it’s perfectly ok to be different, to have a broader view on the world  and also that it’s important to enjoy the beautiful and good things around you, like nature, the beauty of people around you, of music, of food…

Q: What is your beauty regime?

A: I start off my day with water. My only “star” demand that I have during all my trips (be it business or pleasure) is having a room with a bath. So I start the day with a long bath and a cup of tea. After that, I put on my makeup…

 Q: The Ellis Faas product you can’t love without?

A: If it could only be one single product (so I won’t be cheating by saying “a filled Ellis Holder”), then it would be our foundation. I really think it’s a miracle product: first you apply it and think “mmm, is this it?”, but then you wait for a few minutes and the foundation seems to have disappeared but oh boy does it work, without having become a cakey mask.

Q: Can you talk me through your Ellis through the decade images?

A: These  images I made as part of my training as a make-up artist. We were being taught on different styles through the ages, so I decided to do a “make-up of the various decades” using my own face (because I practically was always my own model). Great fun with all the different styling and expressions. Just me, my makeup, the clothes and my camera.
