A Little Piece of Mind exclusively at Liberty April 1st- 6th
Here at Liberty we’re all about embracing artistic talent and creativity. That’s why we’re proud to be involved with A Little Piece of Mind, an international creative project masterminded by international design and branding studio Marque to raise money for homeless charities across three nations.
Over the last six months Marque’s three studios in London, Glasgow and New York have all been working with leading local quiltmakers to create a series of amazing contemporary quilts with a difference. They’ve been collaborating with all sorts of internationally renowned leaders in the creative arts, fashion and design, who all share a belief in the importance of craft and originality in the artisan, to produce the fabrics from which the quilts will be made.
The list of 76 contributors is comprised of some of the biggest names in the fashion world including Vivienne Westwood, Jean Paul Gaultier and Marc Jacobs. Each will be providing a unique ‘little piece of mind’ in the form of a fabric square which will all be sewn into the quilt. We love this idea, we’ve seen some of the squares already – they really are incredible. And what’s really exciting is that Liberty have been asked to contribute some of our fabrics as well! Kirstie Carey, Director of Liberty Art Fabrics donated 8 metres of Tana Lawn including prints, Meadow, Lauren and Elysian.
The finished quilt will be displayed in the Liberty store from 1st to 6th April before being auctioned, with the proceeds divided equally between two charities that are committed to confronting and preventing homelessness in the three cities – Shelter in London and Glasgow and The Bowery Mission in New York.
The squares will be sewn together by Julie Floersch of kwilti.com, who has spent her life in pattern design and fashion. After a few years working for big names like Ralph Lauren and Banana Republic she decided she wanted to create work that was more unique and intimate, and turned to quilting as an art that combined all of her passions. She loves quilts for their personal touch, and the way they are passed down from generation to generation, becoming more special the older they are. In her own words, “You never throw away a quilt – they are too personal”.
The final exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue documenting the process, which will be sold to further the charitable donations. If the project is a success Marque are hoping to make it an annual event, reaching out to help people by means of art, originality and international collaboration – let’s hope they can pull it off!
Quilting Classes with Liberty
We’ve got so caught up in all the creativity surrounding A Little Piece of Mind that we’ve been inspired to spread that creativity even further. Not only will the amazing quilt be displayed in our bed linen department during the first week of April for you to come and marvel at, but we’ll be offering a once-only chance to attend a quilting workshop in store.
The workshop, led by Kim from www.wornandwashedfabrics.com, will run from 11am – 3pm on Saturday 4th April. So if there are any budding quilters out there, or even if you just need a bit of inspiration to get you started, this could be the chance you’ve been waiting for to get those creative juices flowing!
