Liberty is famous for it’s iconic exterior and the windows have always been a focal point for passers by and shoppers alike. In keeping with the circus theme the displays this year are packed full with an array of quirky and festive items. So if you are in the West End this December swing by Great Marlborough Street and come and have a peek.

Each window takes an element of the traditional Travelling Show – a gypsy caravan, a strong man, magicians and acrobats – and recreates it with the well-known Liberty twist. There’s an element of something darkly surreal about the displays – traditional Victorian china dolls gaze blankly out at the spectator within one window echoing the faces of the Fornasetti plates on the wall; a bin almost overflowing with black crows evokes sinister connotations; a woman’s head emerges from a drawer while her arms emerge from another, recalling the traditional Lady Sawn in Half stunt beloved of magicians.

The colours used are circus colours - rich reds, dramatic purples and velvet blacks with shimmering glitters and colourful lights used throughout the windows to dramatic effect, especially when viewed at night. Each window also contains a selection of beautiful products and ideas for Christmas, from each of the departments – chandeliers from the fourth floor, stilettos from the new shoe boutique, decorations from the Christmas shop –Liberty’s wonderfully eclectic content is well represented in these windows.

T

The Travelling Show theme is represented throughout the store as well. Visit the shoe boutique and there’s a woman being sawn in half. Ladieswear is hosting a cannon which is about to fire a woman into the air while in Soft Dressing, a boxing ring has been created – but with glitter rather than sawdust! To emphasise the feeling of being a spectator in the Big Top, the Central Atrium has been hung with red and white stripes drapes and multi-coloured lights.

Maxine Groucutt, our Head of Visual Identity said: “This is the time of year when the windows get most attention and we wanted to convey the sense of visual splendour and excitement that is within Liberty itself. The idea of the Travelling Circus works perfectly as a means of showing off all our ideas – from the unconventional and surprising displays to the idea of family values. And this year, especially, we all need to be reminded about the real value of Christmas as well as being entertained.”

***Christmas is only 12 days away, and all the team are busily packing and wrapping all the online purchases. Don’t forget the last day we can guarantee delivery for Christmas is Monday 15th so make sure you get your order in before then. ***

Hart is very excited to be here he told us, as he feels the Liberty man is one with an educated sense of style who remains on trend at all times. A mixture of classic and cutting edge. Spencer Hart emphasises the importance of style and trend, using quirky twists on classic shapes.

December 2008 sees the launch of a line of tailored garments exclusive to its dymanic Spencer Hart line at Liberty.

Hart went on to say: ‘The pieces share nearly all the values and qualities of the narrow notched lapel, one-button suit that Spencer Hart first introduced and pioneered seven years ago on Savile Row.

These garments are half canvassed and fitted to the body to define an ultra sharp refined and tailored look. High in the armhole and body hugging but at the same time comfortable. The new Spencer Hart line starts at £650 and is extraordinary good value.’

So just in time for Christmas the chaps from Spencer Hart on the Lower Ground floor are on hand to kit you out for the party season with the sharpest suits in town.

One piece in particular caught our eye and we don’t think it will be around long enough to put on the main site. So, we are exclusively offering it as a blog only purchase, if you would like to know any more info or wish to buy this stunning rose necklace then please call 0207 573 9645 or email libertyonline@liberty.co.uk

This piece is part of the range Paradise Lost, it is one of Vicki Beamon’s favourites, made from hundreds of Swarvoski Crystals. Each piece takes a couple of days to form by hand. In the name of research we went and tried it on, and it almost floats around the neck, truly a whimsical piece of statement jewellery.

It only came in to stock on Saturday it is the last one left so if you have your eye on it make sure you don’t miss out. It’s certainly an eyecatcher, perfect for the impending party season.

A sparkly array of opulent pieces adorned the stand from earrings to full body creations from the current and new Spring 09 Collection.

Alex Stylianidis, our Jewellery Buying Manager comments:

“It is really an honour to invite Vicki Beamon to set up shop in our store for jewellery month. The lady who has made jewellery for the Queen herself is majestic herself and a magpie for all things sparkly. A true British icon now, Erickson Beamon will be presenting their Autumn Winter Icon collection as well as exclusive one-off pieces from their studio available for 2 days only. This lady knows how to finish off or start a festive outfit and will have you dripping in all things sparkly by the time she is finished with you.”

Vicki was on hand to answer some questions….

1/ How have you found partaking in Jewellery month at Liberty?

Erickson Beamon has existed for 25 years and we have always thought that doing trunk shows in the wonderful stores we sell to a very important part of our business. Not only is it great to meet the customers, but having some time with the staff so that they get a further understanding of our gorgeous jewellery and what actually goes into the making of it crucial.

2/ What inspires your designs/influences you as a designer?

My partner Karen in New York and myself have a great creative relationship. We design in both New York and London keeping the ideas flowing and fresh. There are many influences, architecture, art, literature, film. This really changes each season. Each collection has a name. For next Spring’s collection we have groups called Gypsy Sun which is a name taken from Jimi Hendrix and is a very Moroccan Coral and Turquise look. We also have Eliza Dolittle and My Fair Lady which is a much more romantic story made from flowers.

3/ What are your favourite pieces from this collection?

I think the Crystal pieces are wonderful choices as they can make a dramatic change to any outfit. I am particularly fond of the flower necklace which belongs to a group called Paradise Lost. This piece is made from Swarovski Crystal and it takes a couple of days to form by hand. The flower almost looks like it is floating in space!

4/ What are your trends/styles/colours for SS09?

I mentioned a few above but we also have a group called Boudica which is made from colourful Agate Slices and marbles! Jewellery is much chunkier for next season and it really is about big statement pieces. Some of the other trends we are working on are African and Folk Inspired and also a cleaner look in Black and White spots.

5/ What can we expect to see from Erickson Beamon next?

There are lots of ideas and we are really hoping to go into a few other accessory catagories next. We would love to have some evening bags for next year.

You can shop the collection here

These rather lovely lamps are selling like hotcakes here at Liberty so we’d thought we’d do some research and see what makes them so great!

The Foto Lamps by Zero were designed by Thomas Bernstrand and Matthias Stohlbom in the style of lamps traditionally used by photographers. The mini version is super cute and much easier to fit into the average size room! It is made from painted steel and die-casted aluminium and is available in 4 playful colours.

You can buy the lamps here

Monica and her team were on hand to answer people’s questions and show new pieces/exclusives from next season.

Liberty’s Jewellery Buyer Alexandra Stylianidis commented ““For Monica, taking part in jewellery month will be a great opportunity to explain directly to our customers the beauty of the precious stones she uses and the meaning and characteristics behind each one. Presenting everything from charms in beautiful stones to stackable and statement rings, this is a great opportunity for you to have a great story to tell about the stone your purchase when buying your gift for a special person. But with Monica’s great prices, it’s also the perfect gift for your self!”

We asked Monica a few questions whilst she was here and this is what she had to say:

1/ How have you found partaking in Jewellery month at Liberty?

It has been wonderful to have the chance for Monica Vinader team and myself to meet the Liberty customers, and to work alongside the Jewellery staff, which are great.

2/ What inspires your designs/influences you as a designer?

I am inspired by vintage Jewellery, by the stones themselves, and by a incredible urge to wear Jewellery: I mostly design pieces I need to have in my Jewellery box!

3/ What are your trends/styles/colours for SS09?

I have lots of pale blue and pink for summer, lots of black and silver and bright turquoise

4/ What can we expect to see from Monica Vinader next?

A great new concept to be launched next year with charms, and my really fab mens range, which women will also want to wear.

Exhibiting their autumn winter 2008 collections, showcasing specially-created pieces and answering all you ever wanted to know about to know about gold and gems, five designers open their trinket boxes of knowledge every weekend throughout November at Liberty for Jewellery Month.

In good time for the preparation of Christmas party looks, each of the designers will be available to advise on how to wear both classic and on-trend pieces from their collections – such as this season’s statement necklaces and cocktail rings – whether on costume or fine jewellery.

Additionally, Liberty of London will be launching its new, gothic-inspired jewellery collection – by creative director Tamara Salman – in an eclectic mix of metals and semi-precious materials.

Jewellery Month kicks off on November 1st/2nd with Zebra. Meticulous in the attention to detail so renowned in the craftsmanship of Italian design (homeland of Zebra), the simple, timeless appeal of monochrome is created in the form of black and white precious stones – diamonds, fresh water pearls, onyx, white agate, mother of pearl and rubber – set in 18-carat white gold.

On the 8th/9th of November we welcome Monica Vinader to the store. From cultural extremes, such as Mexico and South America, Monica creates and absorbs stories and adventures on her travels and revisits them at her rural Norfolk studio to develop ultra-sophisticated, semi-precious pieces with hints of extravagance.

Erickson Beamon 15th/16th November. The magpie-like attraction to all things sparkly served not only as a draw to the bright lights of NYC for Vicki Beamon and Karen Erickson, but later manifested again in the form of crystals and beads on their signature jewellery designs.

On the 22nd/23rd November Liberty opens it’s doors to Isharya. Taking inspiration from cultural and artistic references, Isharya delivers bold, statement pieces that fully embody the collection themes with a truly feminine hand, applied by the design duo behind the label, to create detailed, intricate beauty in their work.

Alex Monroe is a firm favourite with visitors to Liberty and will be featured on 29th/30th November. With an ever-present appreciation for the simple beauty of nature in his work, Alex Monroe’s designs exude delicate femininity and charm, captured over the last twenty years in gold plate and silver.

We’re also extremely excited about the launch of the Liberty of London jewellery range on the 26th November. Giving nature an ethereal twist, creative director Tamara Salman launches a gothic-inspired Liberty of London jewellery collection that takes the wearer on a magical journey through a world of flora and fauna adorned with bug creatures in agate, onyx and labradorite combine with cubic zirconia, Swarovski crystal and marcasite.

Liberty of London deco box bag, £695
“It’s not cheap, but what we wouldn’t give for one of these art deco-inspired evening bags. The type of accessory you could pass on to your granddaughter, this is an investment piece if ever we saw one.”

‘There aren’t words to describe how much I adore this dress,’ says marieclaire.co.uk editor Carla. ‘I’m putting it top of my Christmas wish-list.’

Luella bunny print T-shirt, £70
“Anything Luella touches turns to gold, meaning even her T-shirt designs achieve cult status. This tongue-in-cheek design is just the thing for lazy weekend dressing. ”

Eley Kishimoto print frill dress, £430
“Who says party dresses have to be black? This fabulous print will ensure you really stand out from the crowds at your next black-tie do.”

Acne draped silk tulip dress, £265
‘I have an awards evening coming up,’ says marieclaire.co.uk editor Carla Bevan, ‘and this will be perfect. The plum colour is perfectly on-trend for the current season and the draped neckline ultimately flattering.’

Jessica Kagan Cushman ‘la di da la la’ bangle, £95
“Jessica Kagan Cushman’s quirky rings and bracelets have been a huge hit on the marieclaire.co.uk desk and this bracelet, which reads ‘La di da la la’, is one of our favourites. “

McQ wool peacoat, £415
“A classic peacoat is something every woman should have in her wardrobe, but classic doesn’t need to mean boring! Forgo the regular black and navy ones in store right now and make a real statement in this red version from Alexander McQueen.”

Liberty-print blouse, £75
“A Liberty-print blouse will never go out of fashion. Wear this one under a denim jacket or with this season’s peg-leg trousers for a chic, but subtle, retro style statement.”

Specially commissioned by Liberty, the coins took about three months to design and produce at the Royal Mint. Our distinctive Liberty Gift Coins come beautifully packaged in a purple Liberty pouch, and can be spent throughout the store on anything from the latest season’s fashion collections to distinctive and contemporary furniture.

Much more impressive and substantial than printed paper vouchers (although you can get those too at Liberty) the Gift Coins have an intrinsic, aesthetic and actual value. The copper coloured £10 coin, silver effect £25 coin, gold £50 coin and the platinum £100 coin show that you really have put some thought into a gift voucher purchase. In fact they are so beautifully packed and presented that you might not want to redeem them at all!

But don’t worry! You can keep your Liberty Gift Coins as long as you like because they do not have an expiry date and can be redeemed at any till point throughout the store. If you do use your gift coins in store, any change value over £10 will be given as further gift vouchers. Any change under £10 will be given in genuine coin of the realm – more practical perhaps but we think maybe not as stylish as the Liberty Gift Coin!

We are all very proud of our new shoe department, and on the evening of the Liberty Cardholder party we had the chance to really show it off. To celebrate this Rupert Sanderson came in and held an ‘audience with’ where he chatted about his career and his shoes, it was really interesting to put a face and a character to such a Luxury Brand.

Rupert Sanderson has not always been a shoe designer, he infact started his career in advertising before turning his interest to shoes. He went to Cordwainers College in East London learning the craft then moved to the factories of Italy working for some of the finest shoemakers, including Sergio Rossi. In 2001 he founded his self titled brand, using the traditional shoe factories of Italy to produce his stunningly crafted creations.

Sanderson’s ethos is simple, less is more. He does not overcomplicate his designs, instead works on the form of the shoe. He concentrates on perfecting the line, volume and material to flatter and lengthen the leg which makes women feel sexier. His inspiration comes from the materials themselves: from the sensual curve and silhouettes of the lasts and heels, to the quality and finish of the best leather and fabrics.

This season bright colours and sumptious snakeskin stilletoes and fabulous brothel creepers for the more outrageous puntuate the collection. This is an investment in striking style that enlivens any outfit, a pleasant contradiction to the British grey weather! We will be stocking the best of the collection in our shoes boutique on the 2nd Floor. **Did you know?** Rupert names all his shoes after types of daffodils!

The new At Liberty Magazine launched this week and we have an extract from the Interview Natasha Fraser did with Frederic Malle. Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle will be launching in store and online from October.

Editions de Parfums Frederic Malle is a luxury Parisian perfume house founded in 2000. Frederic Malle is the grandson of Serge Heftler-Louiche, who created the Dior perfume brand, and nephew of Louis Malle. He commissions cult perfumers, like the creators of Poison, Eau Sauvage and Alien, to create their dream scents free of constraints.

How did Editions de Parfums come about?

I’ve wanted to create a direct link between the best noses (perfumers) and the public for a long time. I’ve always believed that most brands are unnecessary go-betweens and that people are not being shown the most interesting part of the business: the noses. In 1998, I was a consultant for a major perfume and I realised that the market did not allow these artists-I include myself- to come up with truly creative and luxurious scents. So I came up with Editions de Parfums. Frustration gave me the drive to turn dream into reality.

What does Editions de Parfums offer that other perfume houses don’t?

We give total freedom to the perfumers because I believe that total freedom leads to the best fragrances. By that, I mean there aren’t financial limits, time limits or marketing nonsense; all enemies of the creative. I’m always on hand if the noses want to use me as a sparring partner. But they don’t have to. My role is to adapt to each of them. Finally, we put their name on the bottle. No one else does that. It’s a case of author, author!

What are the latest scents to join the line?

French Lover, which I was pretty involved with. I had just moved to New York and was feeling quite nostalgic for Saint Germain, so I asked Pierre Bourdon to capture the sexy but understated scent of the locals.

What do you wear?

Dominique Ropion’s Vetiver Extraordinaire defines me. But its impossible to wear anything when I work because I’m always evaluating new fragrances and can smell nothing else. In the summer, I love splashing myself with Cologne Bigarade during the day but prefer wearing French Lover at night-the joys of smelling like a playboy!

You come from an extraordinary family, very involved in the world of scent.

During my childhood, my mother, who was at Christian Dior Parfums, worked on Eau Sauvage with Edmond Roudnitska, the greatest nose of the time. She used to test-drive aftershave on my brother and me. Now, being totally vain, I never stopped wearing Eau Sauvage during my entire youth. Years later, we decided to do a contemporary version of the infamous cologne, something that smelt totally different but gave me the same pleasure:hence Cologne Bigarade.

You knew Christian Louboutin before anyone. Is it true that he buys Lys Mediterranee for all his girlfriends?

He’d better! Otherwise there’d be a major scene de menage.

What have you learnt along the way?

Either make the scents sexy or stay at home!

Liberty played host last Thursday 11th September to the ‘Men Only’ auction in aid of Male Cancer with the Everyman Charity . The Fourth Floor was adorned with art from artists such as Rankin, Damien Hirst and Sir Peter Blake.

Before the auction, Colin Cooper, Head of the Everyman Research Centre spoke briefly about how Everyman have bought awareness to the forms of cancer that are specific to men, and how they can be treated more effectively if caught early. Prostate and Testicular cancer research is severely underfunded and events such as this one are vital to raise the profile of the charity. Dudley Sutton, best known for his role as Tinker in Lovejoy, also performed a witty monologue before the auction.

Nick Bonham led the proceedings and bids were frantic for pieces which included a hand-drawn shark and skull on the Beyond Belief exhibition book by Damien Hirst. It fetched the highest single bid of the auction, with the hammer going down at £5000. The event had a great feel to it, with a live jazz band and plenty of champagne flowing which helped to up the bids, raising over £50,000 for Everyman.

It promises to nourish and treat the hair, increasing its diameter and repairing fine or damaged hair. The formula contains Avocado Oil, wheat protein, Macadamia Seed Oil and Ojon Oil which rejuvenates and hydrates the hair leaving a glossier, shiner appearance. No wonder its flying off the shelves!

Denis Simoni, founder of Ojon, has literally discovered the secret to beautiful hair. Ojon haircare is named after its key ingredient, Ojon Palm Nut Oil which has been used by the people of the Tawira Indian tribe for centuries to condition and protect their hair. When Denis Simoni discovered the oil and the Tawari tribe, whose name actually means ‘the people of beautiful hair’, he had the idea of producing a haircare line with a difference. All Ojon products are built around Ojon oil which continues to be harvested by hand by the Tawari tribes, who receive a portion of all profits and are consulted on every aspect of the business. Harvests are limited to protect the oil as the tree grows only in a specific part of the Amazon. This precious natural resource truly does hold the secret to shiny and healthy hair.

The AW08 Collection of Liberty fabrics is inspired by the greats from the Liberty archive. The traditional designs have been rescaled and reinvented to sit on trend with the Liberty customer of 2008. The colour directions were taken from five National Trust properties, before the team hit the drawing board for the start of the design process, creating inspirational mood boards. The excerpts below have been taken directly from the boards put together for the collection this season.

  2 Willow Road - 1939

“Pupose built for a better way of living” - Erno Goldfinger, a Hungarian architect, designed and built his modern family home adhering to the modernist principles. Sparse, simple and modern - decor and objects were selected to reflect the personality of the owner. Willow Road is an intriguing insight to the recent past - modern day life in the 1940’s.

Batemans

A rich Jacobean interior created by author and owner Rudyard Kipling. Look no further than a study…walls lined with books, artefacts and ornaments collected on global travels, working tools - typewriter, ink, seals and script. Kipling and his wife created an interior to compliment their home and reflect the author’s sources of inspiration.

Uppark - Georgian Splendour

Designed by William Talisman, the rich interior is a reflection of a gracious lifestyle. A glorious “Georgian” renovation was completed in the 1750’s and the home furnished with exquisite pieces collected during a “grand tour”. Uppark inspires a rich warm palette of colour, from the palest of Powder Pink to the rich intensity of “Purple Braid” - highlights of Porcelain and Gold Leaf.

  Wightwick - 1887, “Arts & Crafts” Interior

Owner Theodore Mander created a colourful and inviting interior inspired by the arts and crafts movement. Exquisite details - pattern, design and colour, Wightwick was designed for maximum “picturesque” effect. A palette of “Arts & Crafts” Blue with soft warm highlights of Ceramic Glaze.

Osterley - Stately Grandeur

In 1761, Adams completed a full renovation of this imposing stately home. Drawing on his skills and appreciation of “classical antiquity” gained in Italy during the 1750’s. Adams created a “cool, classic” interior. His success quickly marked him as the new leader on the London fashion scene. From Osterley we create an icey cool collection of strong winter pastels; Stucco, Ceiling Rose, Corinthian and Nymph.

The boutique takes up the whole of the East Atrium and Gallery on the 2nd floor (where all the China and Glass used to be) and is designed to be reminiscent of a stately home; the Garden Room is a tropical paradise, the Budoir is all about seduction and the Piano Room is the height of decadence.

So if you are in a shoe mood this is the place to come to feed your addiction. Lots more shoes are on their way, including exclusives from Nicholas Kirkwood, an extensive collection from Rupert Sanderson and our full Autumn/Winter buy.

Michelle has been at Liberty for nearly two years and is the buyer for all things 4th Floor; that’s all the furniture (new and antique), lighting, fabrics, and cushions…basically that makes her one very busy lady. She did however stop long enough to tell us some of her favourite things. She loves the Adam & Viktoria cushions but her overall favourite piece is from the Knoll exhibition: the Frank Gehry Cross Check Chair. Its ribbon like frame looks incredible; made of maple wood and constructed in the early 1990s, it is for sale at £3349.

We asked Michelle about trends, a tricky topic simply because she has an open buy, which means she bu
